Literacy Department
The Literacy Department provides enrichment for all ages through various language development programs. Our goal is to bring together community partnerships to create a rich environment for learning and personal growth.
The foundation for all Literacy Department activities is the recognition of the value of reading.

Adult Literacy
One 2 One
Trained volunteers provide free, one on one tutoring for adult learners who want to reach individual learning goals such as English as a Second Language, adult literacy, GED preparation, and Citizenship. Learners must be 17 years or older. Adult Literacy Learner Application
Practice Your English
Volunteers facilitate informal meetings to practice English conversation skills and to improve cultural awareness. All are welcome!
Inmate Education
Trained volunteers work with inmates at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office for GED test preparation, English as a Second Language, and the Inmate Read-A-Book program.
GED Testing
Monthly GED Testing is offered in Partnership with Douglas County School District at Douglas County High School. Pre-Register online at www.GED123.org or call 303 791 READ for more information.
Citizenship Classes
In partnership with Douglas County School District, class sessions are offered twice a year to prepare candidates for the U.S. Citizenship interview. We've prepared a helpful U.S. Citizenship Tutorial.
Spanish Language Classes
District-wide evening classes are offered in beginning and intermediate Spanish language and culture.

Enjoy a soothing story, day or night.
New stories for toddlers/preschoolers and school-age children every week, plus information for parents about childhood literacy.
Book Start: Early Literacy Volunteer Project
Trained volunteers read aloud & promote early literacy in participating child care centers. Bookstart Training
Spellbinders - Volunteer Storytellers
Volunteers, 55 and older, are trained in the art of storytelling and tell stories in Douglas County School District classrooms, creating intergenerational relationships and enhancing language development.
Cuddle Up and Read
Books, parenting information and an application for a special baby library card are given to families of newborns.
Every Child Ready to Read
All of our storytimes are based on the American Libraries Association's Every Child Ready Read approach to early literacy. This research-based system helps children experience all the important literacy activities they need when they get to school. Storytimes focus on fun and play with language, while promoting a love of reading, books, and the library from an early age.
